Aiken Regional's History
Project Launches in February

To say the history of Aiken is unique is an understatement. There are hundreds of interesting stories that many residents may not have heard: Why did crowds gather when Fred Astaire went to the post office? Why does Aiken have parkways -- other than for their beauty and to confuse out-of-towners? Did a dog really stroll down Hayne Avenue wearing the Hope Diamond? And, what happened when astronomers from around the world gathered here in 1882 to view the transit of Venus?

In order to share these and other surprising stories, Aiken Regional sponsored the production of a series of 30-second videos to air on local television stations that will also be available online at www.AikenRegional.com, accompanied by essays. Teachers and students, especially those studying South Carolina's history, are sure to find this Web site a useful resource. And everyone will find great stories to tell friends and relatives when they visit this special place we call home. Watch for the launch of the Web site and for stories to air in February.
